So over the weekend there has been fevered speculation that Burnham would call a snap election next spring, just like May did a decade earlier. Burnham has now come out to deny there would be an election but so did Theresa May before inexplicably calling one the following year. She lost her majority because (thanks to Bliar) Corbyn was not a credible alternative to May. Burnham had to win a (fixed against him) by-election to become PM, if the (real) powers that be told him, either agree to hold a GE in 2027 or lose the by-election, of course he would accept the deal, wouldn't you? Now Theresa May was different as she didn't contest a by-election but her rival in the leadership contest (Leadsom) mysteriously pulled out at the last minute despite being favourite to win the members vote and become PM (but Leadson was second to May in MP's vote). Did May agree to hold an election in 2017 in exchange for Leadsom pulling out of the race?
So what do the (real) powers that be have in store for Burnham if there is an election next year? That depends how the Battenberg versus Spencer situation develops. If the Battenbergs are still in charge I foresee Burnham lose his majority or being forced into a coalition (like May) but not to lose power as Farage (or Badenough) are not credible alternatives. If it's King Harry....hmmm...watch this space....
